The Brick Block

This brick building was on the north side of Main Street, west of the stream. It contained the J. P. Curtis Dry Goods and Groceries store and a grist mill. It is also known as the Eagle Block. William Ireland and Elam Burrill built the block and grist mill in 1877. In 1893, William’s widow, Mary (also Elam’s sister) sold her share to Samuel Burrill. In 1894 the property was sold to Leslie Ireland. According to the label attached to the photo it burned in 1903. That may be incorrect. There was a major fire in this area on July 4 in 1904. The I.O.O.F. Hall was built on this site in 1907.
